Jordan seems to think that vegan and orthorexic are synonymous. 

I came across the article shown below in Elle magazine’s December issue. It intrigued me with the gross image and title “Feeding Frenzy”. Having been a vegan for about 4 months at the time, I was still enjoying soaking up all knowledge (and honestly just about anything) regarding veganism. This article wasn’t exactly speaking fondly of veganism and it seemed that the book it discussed also wouldn’t be. Breaking Vegan? Why would anyone want such a thing? I’m happily thriving on my vegan diet, loving the fact that I have more energy and am saving loads of innocent lives all the while.


This article and some further research solidified the idea in my mind that I needed to read this book – and I have.

I certainly had some preconceived ideas coming into reading the book, but I couldn’t help but not only like but also pity the author Jordan Younger, writer of the former The Blonde Vegan blog, since changed to The Balanced Blonde. I, like perhaps many adolescent girls in the U.S., had struggled with my image growing up, the extent to which I am not fully comfortable with sharing yet. I could understand the anxiety Jordan had regarding food and I can sympathize with how difficult it is to break through the mental confines one can set up with food. However, all that being said, I still find the title largely misleading.

This book is not about Jordan Younger breaking veganism because it in itself was bad for her. This is about Jordan Younger breaking habits that were bad for her and whether she did it intentionally or not, she left a bad taste for veganism in the mouths of her many readers. She promotes her Breaking Vegan book to her 135k Instagram followers, many of them impressionable young women like she was when she started her food journey. Jordan also reveals in the last couple of chapter of her book that she still enjoys eating a mostly plant-based diet but no longer feels the need to label it. Then why has she labeled her perilous journey as vegan? Jordan Younger seems to think that vegan and orthorexia are synonymous.

I applaud Jordan for writing the book, sharing her journey and struggles was courageous. I also think this book is great for bringing about awareness of orthorexia and shedding light on how serious it can be – I know in my own journey and reading online people shrug off orthorexia and often don’t consider it as serious as other eating disorders. Hopefully this book will help push away that stigma. However, the stigma it has left on veganism is very damaging. Although it’s too late to change the name of her book now, I find it strange that neither she, being the bright young lady she is, or anyone from her publisher stopped to think whether it was fitting. It’s not – this book title is just bait to get people to read it. Sadly, at the expense of innocent animal’s lives.

I totally understand where the anger and disappointment in Jordan comes from from my fellow vegans, however I encourage you not to leave nasty comments on Jordan’s posts, which I am seeing way too many of. Attacking her will not make her want to come back to the vegan lifestyle and it will only add to the pushy stereotype that we vegans can get. We can try to educate people against what the title of the book implies by using science and facts, rather than names.  Aren’t we for peace anyway? Let’s show that.
